The Anglo-Spanish mezzo Karina Lucas has in a short time made a significant
impact on British opera.
Karina Lucas trained at the Royal Northern College of Music (Allcard Award;
Musicians Benevolant Fund Award; Annie Ridyard Award), where she received
a First Class Honours Degree and a Distinction for her Post Graduate Diploma;
before pursuing further studies at the National Opera Studio, where her studies
were supported by Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She currently studies with
Barbara Robotham.
Her engagements include: Third Lady (Die Zauberflote) and Pinocchio for
Opera North; Witch (Macbeth) for Scottish Opera; Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte) for
the Ryedale Festival; and Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte), Leila (Iolanthe),
Maddalena (Rigoletto), Wowkle (La Fanciulla del West) and Nymph (Rusalka)
for Grange Park Opera.
Further engagements include: Baba the Turk (The Rake’s Progress), Pauline
(Pikovaya Dama), Mother, Granny, Giant (Into the Woods) and Meg Page
(Falstaff) for the Royal Northern College of Music; Annina (La Traviata) for
Pimlico Opera; Sesto (Giulio Cesare) for the Yorke Trust; and Olga (Eugene
Onegin) for Opera 74.
Karina Lucas was personally selected by Jonathan Dove to sing the role of
Sara in his opera Tobias and the Angel for the re-opening of the Young Vic
Theatre. Her performance was subsequently recorded for commercial release
at a later date.
Karina also appears regularly on the concert platform. Performances include
Mendelssohn’s Elijah for Ulverston Choral Society, Rossini’s Petite Messe
Solenelle and Mozart’s Requiem for Wetherby Choral Society, Bach St John’s
Passion for Sheffield Bach Choir, Berkeley’s Four Poems by St Teresa of Avila
for Lake District Summer Music, Rachmaninov’s Vespers and Britten’s Rejoice
in the Lamb with Huddersfield Choral Society (conducted by Martyn Brabbins),
Handel’s Messiah for both Blackburn and Salford Choral Society, Mozart’s
Requiem for Viva (conducted by Nicholas Kok), Elgar’s Sea Pictures with the
Bath Philharmonia, Elgar’s The Music Makers with Rossini’s Stabat Mater for
Lytham St Annes Choral Society and Duruflé’s Requiem for Festival La Tour in
Perpignon, France.
Future engagements include Flora (The Enchanted Pig) at the Royal Opera
House Covent Garden, the Victory Theater on Broadway and on tour
throughout the United Kingdom. Karina Lucas is generously supported by the
