David Walker's highly acclaimed performance of Nero in THE CORONATION
OF POPPEA at English National Opera led the London Times to exclaim that
David Walker "has now joined the rank of top flight countertenors." Following
his New York City Opera debut as Arsace in PARTENOPE, The New York
Times praised Mr. Walker as "a poised and cultivated artist" whose voice has
"a bright, clear sound, sure technical agility, and musical sophistication."
The Australian hailed his performance as the Refugee in FLIGHT (for which
he was nominated for an Australian Helpmann Award) by writing "Playing the
refugee, David Walker, with his shining siren of a voice, is the most
magnificent countertenor to hit the world opera stage in years."
Mr. Walker, known for his expressively interpretive artistry and deeply
connective dramatic sense, is highly sought after in operatic work ranging
from the Baroque to the Contemporary.
Some highlights of his career include: a noted performance of Bertarido in
Handel's RODELINDA, opposite Renée Fleming, at the Metropolitan Opera;
singing the title role in the North American premiere of Petitgerard's THE
ELEPHANT MAN at Minnesota Opera (which he later reprised for the Parisian
premiere in the prestigious Salle Pleyel at the invitation of the composer); the
North American premiere of Jonathan Dove's FLIGHT, as the Refugee, at
Opera Theatre of St. Louis (which he reprised at Boston Lyric Opera and at
the Adelaide International Festival, Australia); the title role in Glass'
AKHNATEN with Opéra National du Rhin, Strasbourg, France; Goffredo in
Handel's RINALDO at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich, Germany (filmed
live and released on DVD); the title role in Handel's FLAVIO at NYCO and
performances of Vivaldi’s JUDITHA TRIUMPHANS in Sydney, Australia
(recorded live and released on CD on the ABC Classics Label).
In opera, oratorio, and orchestral performances on the world's most
celebrated stages, David Walker continues to display the artistry, which has
earned him enthusiastic and international acclaim.
His honors include a 1999 ARIA (Awards Recognizing Individual Artistry)
award, winning the 1998 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, a
1998 Sullivan Foundation Career Grant, and 1st place in the 1997 Florida
Grand Opera Competition.
