Giorgio Zancanaro is widely regarded as one of the greatest Verdi baritones
of modern times.
Giorgio Zancanara was born and educated in Verona. In 1970 he won the
Busetto International Singing Competition Voci Verdiani and soon after made
his debut at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan as Riccardo in I Puritani. In 1977, he
made his international debut in Hamburg, and in the same year began a
thirty-year relationship with the Zurich Opernhaus, where he remains a
Principal Guest Artist.
In Italy, has sung at the Arena di Verona, the Teatro La Fenice Venezia, the
Teatro Regio di Parma, the Teatro Regio di Torino, the Teatro dell’Opera di
Roma, the Teatro Comunale di Firenze and the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli.
Giorgio Zancanaro made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in 1981
in the role of Ford (Falstaff). His has since appeared at the theatre in roles as
diverse as Guillaume Tell, Sharpless, Enrico Ashton, Nabucco and Riccardo
Forth – all under the baton of Maestro Riccardo Muti.
Within Europe, Giorgio Zancanaro has appeared at numerous opera houses,
including the Opera de Paris, the Staatsoper Wien, the Oper Frankfurt, the
Bayerische Staatsoper, the Teatro Sao Carlo Lisboa, the Theatre du Capitole
Toulouse and the Opera National de Bordeaux.
In 1985, Giorgio Zancanaro made a remarkable Covent Garden debut in the
role of Gerard (Andrea Chenier). He has returned to the theatre regularly in
roles such as il Conte di Luna, Renato and Ezio.
Giorgio Zancanaro made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York as
Renato in Un Ballo in maschera, returning to the house as il Conte di Luna.
Giorgio Zancanaro has recorded extensively for RCA, Deutsche Gramafon,
CBS and Philipps.
